Samsung launches world's first curved screen smartphone Galaxy Round

SEOUL: Samsung Electronics launched the world's first smartphone with a curved display, a variant of the Galaxy Note which moves the Asian giant a step closer to achieving wearable devices with flexible - even unbreakable - screens.

Curved displays are on the frontline of Samsung's innovation war with rivals such as Apple and LG Electronics, as the South Korean firm seeks to expand its lead in the slowing market for high-end smartphones.

"It's a step forward for having unbreakable gadgets and flexible devices eventually. But for now, the new phone is more of a symbolic product," said Hana Daetoo Securities analyst Nam Dae-jong, adding that Samsung did not yet have capacity for large-scale production of curved touch-screens for the new Galaxy Round.

The Galaxy Round is Samsung's attempt to gauge consumer appetite for curved phones although its lack of other eye-catching features means it is unlikely to be a hit, he said.

"I don't think it'll be massively compelling enough for gadget buyers as ... the curved display doesn't come with many unique features," he said.

The Galaxy Round's 5.7-inch (14.4-centimetre) display has a slight horizontal curve and weighs less than the Galaxy Note 3, allowing a more comfortable grip than other flat-screen models on the market, Samsung said in a statement.

Its key features include a tilt function which allows users to check information such as missed calls and battery life, even when the home screen is off. Users can also scroll through media files by pressing the screen's right or left, the company said.

The phone initially would be available only in South Korea and no decision had been made about releasing it in other markets.

Design challenges
Curved displays open up possibilities for bendable designs that could eventually transform the high-end smartphone market, where growth has slowed amid competition from low-end producers.

Samsung's Galaxy Gear smartwatch released last month has a flat screen, but the company is hoping to have the technology to make more attractive and wearable devices in what is shaping as a key battleground for consumer electronics companies.

Technology firms have yet to figure out how to cheaply mass produce the parts and come up with display panels that can be thin and heat-resistant. Batteries also have to take new forms to support flexible screens that can be rolled out, attached to uneven surfaces or even stretched. The battery in the Galaxy Round is not curved, Samsung said.

Competition is heating up with Samsung's cross-town rival LG Electronics planning to introduce a smartphone with a vertically curved display in the first week of November, a source familiar with the matter said this week.

Its components affiliate, LG Chem, said on Tuesday it had started commercial production of a curved battery for use in the device.

The firm also said it has developed a battery in cable form, suitable for wearable devices, and expected to start commercial production within the next couple of years.

Technology analysts and media reports say Apple is working on a smartwatch, potentially with a curved screen, but there has been no word from the California-based company about its plans.

Samsung's new curved-screen phone, available through South Korea's biggest mobile carrier SK Telecom, costs 1.089 million won ($1,000).

First Aid Kit For Your Pc.....

Just like every home has a First Aid Kit for medical emergencies, it pays to have something similar for your PC. All you need is a pen drive that's loaded with essential, troubleshooting software. The tools listed in this piece are free, and run straight out of a USB stick, so you don't even need to install them. And yes, it also means you can carry this 'First Aid Kit' along whenever you want to help friends with their computer problems...

ClamWin

The portable version of ClamWin antivirus can be used to scan your PC for viruses. This is extremely useful because malware can sometimes disable the antivirus software installed on your PC. With ClamWin on your flash drive, you will be able to identify and remove infections.

To keep your PC spic-andspan, you will also need to routinely scan it for spyware and adware. These are pesky programs that get installed along with free software, or if you might have clicked on an unknown web link in an e-mail. To take care of these malicious programs, also keep SpyBot - Search & Destroy on the flash drive. Just make sure you have the updated versions of ClamWin and SpyBot on your USB stick at all times.

CCleaner
If your PC seems sluggish while performing basic tasks like opening a document, or during web browsing sessions, it's probably because of the temporary files created by the software you use. To purge your system of this junk, try CCleaner. Extract the contents of CCleaner's '.zip' file to a folder of the same name on your pen drive. Now, launch the software by double-clicking the '.exe' file and start spring cleaning your machine.

Recuva
Recuva comes with a simple, wizard-driven interface that makes it easy to retrieve files that you might have permanently deleted from your PC. A 'deep scan' lists deleted files in a friendly searchable format, along with the option to preview them if they are images. That said, there is no guarantee that you will always be able to retrieve deleted data. Also, if the files you're trying to recover are extremely critical, it is best to handover this job to professional companies that do this for a fee.

Revo Uninstaller
Uninstalled software sometimes leave residue in the form of files and Registry entries. These are not easy to find and end up hogging precious space. Revo Uninstaller saves you the trouble of manually clearing these files by thoroughly uninstalling a program. It can also be used to remove those stubborn toolbars that refuse to go away. An alternative to Revo Uninstaller is PC Decrapifier - a portable tool that does just as its name suggests.

AutoRuns for Windows
If your PC takes time to boot to the desktop, then it is probably because of the number of programs that are configured to launch during the Windows start-up process. With AutoRuns, you can cut down on these programs. It analyses your machine and shows you the services and programs that are scheduled to run during the boot process. Carefully deselect the ones that are not required at launch and you will improve start-up times. You can also use WinPatrolToGo to the same effect.

How to prep your USB flash drive
:::::
*To create your PC First Aid Kit you will need a pen drive with at least 2GB capacity. If possible, invest in one that supports USB 3.0 - this will guarantee faster read-write speeds on newer PCs that support the standard.

*Format your drive: Double-click My Computer and right-click the external drive icon that appears under Devices with Removable Storage.

*Click on Format and select FAT32 from the drop-down list as the file system of choice.

*Check the Quick Format box and click Start to initiate the process.

*Your USB flash drive is now ready to be filled with portable apps. It is recommended that you regularly replace the software on the flash drive with latest revisions. For example, an up-to-date antivirus will be more capable of detecting new threats.

:::: AND THE MOST AWAITED ONE:::

Killzone Shadow Fall:

Without doubt the number one game seen on the PLaystation 4 is Killzone Shadow Fall. This is the one game that truly showed off the power of Playstation 4. While I personally have to fault the fact that the gameplay looks precisely the same as every other shooter in the universe, the sheer beauty of the graphics are enough to shut me up. This is Eye Candy +1. Tasty!

InFAMOUS: Second Son:

The trailer for Infamous Second Sun was pretty stupid. Sucker Punch desperately tried to stir drama by asking what would happen if people with superpowers suddenly revealed themselves in a world of over-surveillance. . . which, to be fair, is a pretty random question to ask.   InFamous Second Son will be a Playstation 4 exclusive

Watch Dogs

The footage Ubisoft showed of Watch Dogs for Playstation 4 might have been near identical to what they showed at E3 last year, but it still makes for a highly interesting prospect.    Watch Dogs advocated invasion of privacy in an open world

Final Fantasy

Shinji Hashimoto announced that a new Final Fantasy would be released on PLaystation 4. Will this be the brilliant kind of Final Fantasy from years ago, or the new and utterly rubbish type of Final Fantasy? Time will tell. Expect it by 2023 ! Although the 2023 release date is a half-joke, it’s not really funny how long Square Enix takes to release Final Fantasy games these days, so it is most definitely not coming for a few years. This way it might be a pleasant 2014-2015 surprise if you’re not waiting for it.

Deep Down (working title):

Capcom’s brand new IP is still shrouded in mystery, is it Monster Hunter meets Dark Souls? Only time will tell. Known only under its working title of “Deep Down”, the dragon-fighting knightin the teaser shows off a brand new game engine codenamed “Panta Rhei.”

Has iPhone 5C proved Steve Jobs right?

SAN FRANCISCO: Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who emphasized high-end consumer gadgets over cheaper ones, may have been right all along. Last month, chief executive officer Tim Cook introduced the colorful iPhone 5C, a less-expensive version of Apple's smartphone, to "serve even more customers" around the world. It turns out people so far are more interested in its pricier, feature rich cousin, the 5S.

Three surveys in the past two weeks said the company's new high-end model is outselling the 5c by at least 2 to 1. KGI Securities, a brokerage firm, slashed its quarterly estimates for 5C sales by a third, and retailers like Wal-Mart Stores and Target have reduced the phone's price. The Wall Street Journal reported Apple's orders to suppliers for the iPhone 5C have been cut by a third.

Customers are shrugging off the $99 iPhone 5c even as Apple spends heavily to advertise the handset, which is last year's model repackaged in a colored plastic case. The 5C, which costs $100 less than the souped-up iPhone 5S, is Apple's attempt to lure buyers in developing markets like China, where Samsung and other Android phone makers lead. Even so, big sales of the pricier model are a boon because they carry fatter profit margins.

"Apple customers are still interested in premium products from a premium brand," said Laurence Balter, an analyst at Oracle Investment Research in Fox Island, Washington. "If anything, the 5C is a failed experiment in trying to please the masses. Apple should stay focused on the premium and let Samsung take the lower end of the market."

Yahoo acquires URL-shortner, ad-service startup

Yahoo said that it acquired Bread, a URL shortner that allows users to design then target advertisements to readers who click on their links.

WASHINGTON: Yahoo said that it acquired tech company Bread, a URL shortner that allows users to design then target advertisements to readers who click on their links.

"Through this acquisition, we're gaining a team of six engineers and product managers who will join our advertising technology organization in Sunnyvale," a Yahoo spokesperson said.

Bread, which has already been shuttered, allowed users to make and insert ads that people clicking through to a shortened link's webpage would have to view, according to media.

"When we launched Bread in 2011, our goal was to help social media influencers and publishers better monetize their online content," the company said in a statement.

All Bread links will be viable until November 11, at which point the company says users should switch to another URL shortner, bit.ly.

Yahoo has been undergoing major changes since former Google executive Marissa Mayer became boss just over a year ago, notably acquiring what is now more than 20 startups including the billion-dollar buy of blog platform Tumblr.
